Club Statement

Sylvania Heights Community & Youth Club (SHCYC) t/as Sylvania Heights FC

To our football players, parents and families,

This is not a message we ever wanted to write.

For more than 70 years, Sylvania Heights has been a place where kids learned the game of football, made lifelong friends, and pulled on the “Trees” shirt with pride. That history belongs to every family who has ever been part of it, including yours.

Regrettably, on 2 June, the Sutherland Shire Football Association decided that players registered with Sylvania Heights FC would be moved to a newly formed club, removing you from representing Sylvania Heights FC. We understand how confusing and unsettling this is. Many of you signed up with Sylvania Heights expecting the season you’ve always known, with the people and the badge you’ve always known, and that is not how things have turned out.

We want to be clear and transparent with you: this was not the outcome we worked for, and we are also upset by decisions made and how it came about. We had hoped the people involved would put players and families first. We don’t believe that happened, and we’re sad for what it has cost this community and its long standing history.

But our focus now is on what we can do to support current players and families who can no longer play for Sylvania Heights FC in the local competition.

As you are no longer part of the Sylvania Heights family, the Sylvania Heights Community & Youth Club Management Committee has decided to refund your remaining fees for 2026.

You can find out how to claim your refund here:

We ask that all refund applications be lodged by 1 July 2026.

All questions about the remainder of the 2026 season and beyond should be directed to the duly elected committee of the new entity, Sylvania FC, as they are the people responsible.

Please understand that the decisions taken by representatives of Sylvania FC and the Sutherland Shire Football Association have created this outcome.

To every family who has been part of Sylvania Heights, thank you. Thank you for your patience, your loyalty, and your love of this game. Whatever shirt your child wears next season, you will always be part of the Sylvania Heights story.

Whilst Sylvania Heights FC has been blocked for playing in the Sutherland Shire Football Association’s competition, we will be exploring what other opportunities we can provide to the local community.

With warmth and gratitude,

Management Committee of Sylvania Heights Community & Youth Club – Sylvania Heights FC

COVID-19

As you know the COVID-19 situation is changing very quickly. Like everyone else, the Youth Club also needs to make decisions about how we can continue to operate in the current environment. In making these decisions our overriding principle is that we MUST take every precaution to keep our members and the community safe. In some cases, it will be necessary to make some decisions in order to comply with Government requirements as well as edicts from National/State/Local sporting associations.

Taking into account the latest information provided by the Government and NSW Health department as at 17 March 2020 please note the following:

1. The Youth club’s outdoor activities namely cricket, soccer and netball have had their training, trials and seasons postponed by their relevant sporting associations. The Youth club will comply with these decisions meaning there is to be no training, trials or competition matches.

2. No new external hire bookings will be taken for any dates prior to 1 July 2020.

3. Existing external hire bookings will be contacted on an individual basis to discuss compliance with the Government’s latest announcements and how health and hygiene requirements can be satisfied.

4. In relation to all other Youth Club indoor-based activities, the SHCYC executive and representatives of the Management Committee have determined that it is in the best interests of all our members that these are postponed for a minimum of 4 weeks commencing Midnight Thursday 19th March 2020.

Whilst we recognise that we don’t necessarily have significant numbers congregating at the same time, maintaining the status quo means that we will have members, parents and grandparents of the community coming going at all times of the day and evening. The fact that we use / share enclosed areas means that we cannot possibly guarantee the safety of all our members and visitors without the Youth Club activities bearing significant costs in relation to increased hygiene measures in order to meet health department guidelines for COVID-19 including in circumstances where a suspected case is reported.

We will of course keep you updated on any changes to this decision. We understand that this decision will have an impact on people’s recreational activities and their wellbeing so we will continue to monitor the situation closely.

In the meantime, please feel free to speak to me if you have any questions.
